How is statutory redundancy pay calculated in the UK?
For each complete year of service (up to 20, counted back from your redundancy date): half a week’s pay for a year worked under age 22, one week for ages 22–40, and one and a half weeks for 41 and over. Weekly pay is capped at £751 in England, Scotland and Wales (£783 in Northern Ireland) from 6 April 2026, giving a maximum of £22,530 (£23,490 NI).
Who qualifies for statutory redundancy pay?
Employees with at least 2 complete years of continuous service whose job ceases to exist. Notice pay and unused holiday are owed regardless of service length.
Is redundancy pay taxable in the UK?
Statutory redundancy pay is tax-free. Combined redundancy packages (including enhanced or ex-gratia amounts) are tax-free up to £30,000 in total; amounts above that are taxed as income.
What if I’m paid monthly or my pay varies?
Multiply your gross monthly salary by 12 and divide by 52 to get weekly pay. If your pay varies, an average of the 12 weeks before your notice is used.
